As an Egyptian millennial who loves fashion and to dress well I recently grew an appetite for thrift clothes, don’t judge me, I can hear you!
those early 2000’s…oh wait we don’t speak about that period of time..just google early 2000’s fashion trends and you will get what I’m talking about so let’s just erase that period before those Gen-Zs come at us with their “it’s the fashion for me” judgemental tones.
I meant to say those 90’s and 80’s clothes that are making such a comeback now and suddenly they are so trendy they make you feel like an influencer when you look back at your 90’s childhood pictures.
for those who don’t know what thrift shopping or thrifting means, it means buying clothes that are gently used items at “discounted” prices..thrifted clothes have been loved by a previous owner but are usually in good shape with enough life left to be useful to a new owner.
So, I started searching for thrift stores around Alexandria and Cairo and boy was I shocked!
as usual most Egyptians love monetizing on trends without thinking and those instagram/facebook pages started popping up selling pre-owned clothes with ridiculous prices !
those people are selling these clothes for prices you would find at a fast fashion store…SHAMELESSLY !
I mean I once found a previously owned H&M T-shirt that costs 300 LE. while a brand new T-shirt from the same store costs around 350 LE.
that’s just ridiculous!
and to make matters worse, in Cairo there is this neighbourhood that has shops that usually sell pre-owned clothes at way cheaper prices so of course those whitewashed Gen-Zs had to jump on that trend because duh they are influencers and started going there and vlogging about it so those shops obviously started raising their prices to benefit from the exposure.
so basically, thrift shopping in egypt now became for the rich and we who like fashion yet don’t want to waste money on it can just stick to our current wardrobe till this whole thing blows off.
I swear it makes me think about starting my own shop and sell those pre loved clothes at a reasonable price, saving Egypt by making it fashionable one person at a time.
hey, that could even be my slogan ! lol.
what do you think my precious readers? tell me your opinion about thrifting I would love to hear your thoughts!
